Movies About Hackers

Whenever the word “hacker” was heard by most, negative thoughts were the first to enter on their vocabulary. I disagree to that, but not totally. Some are really bad guys but there are some who uses their skills in useful things. For this, I’d like to recommend these cool movies about hackers. I guess, it’s better that we understand their culture before we judge all of the computer geeks and hackers.

Hackers (1995)

A young boy is arrested by the US Secret Service for writing a computer virus and is banned from using a computer until his 18th birthday. Years later, he and his new-found friends discover a plot to unleash a dangerous computer virus, but they must use their computer skills to find the evidence while being pursued by the Secret Service and the evil computer genius behind the virus.[IMDB]

Actually, this one is my favorite (Not because of Angelina Jolie! I promise!). I love the scene here where massive numbers of hackers all-over the world hacks into Gibson.

Take Down (2000) also known as Track Down

For years Kevin Mitnick -– the most notorious computer hacker in the nation — had eluded Federal agents while using the latest electronic gadgetry to break into countless computers and gain access to sensitive and valuable information. But when he breaches the system of leading computer crimes expert Tsutomu Shimomura, it sets off an epic chase through cyberspace between a pair of hard-driven geniuses operating on different sides of the law. [Wikipedia]

This one is based on true story of a hacker, Kevin Mitnick. The movie is not that good but there’s a lot of scene to show one of the most basic yet important skills of a hacker, that’s social engineering.

Antitrust (2001) also known as and Startup

A computer programmer’s dream job at a hot Portland-based firm turns nightmarish when he discovers his boss has a secret and ruthless means of dispatching anti-trust problems. [IMDB]

What I love in this movie is the story about the fight and success of the open-source. Although everything in this movie is fictional, I just love it. I also like a quote from this movie: “Human knowledge belongs to the world.”

These movies might be old but I am sure that you’ll like them. I’m sorry, I can’t provide download links or streaming for those movies but if you would ask Google, he could take you into somewhere. I’ll be posting more about hackers and computer geeks so, go back here any time, or like us on facebook, or follow us on twitter. For now, enjoy watching.
